Fall 2019 Drone Pilot

October 2, 2019

As the UAS team gets deeper into the semester live data will will soon be required, one candidate who has presented himself to become the first licensed pilot is Alexander Roman. Romanhas taken the task of obtaining a drone pilot license, a very difficult step, yet one he is willing to take. Roman joined the UAV team in order to gain experience and in the future merge his Computer Science degree with agriculture. Born and raised in Novato, CA, Roman has always had an interest in agriculture and in ways to use technology to help farmers.

As Roman was interviewed in the UAS Lab he explained that he plans to ace the written test and obtain his FAA Part 107 license. Roman explained how one of the requirements of the test is to memorize the air traffic patterns and runway orientation. As he was kind enough to present to us a question on his practice test which asked “An aircraft announces, “left downwind for runway one six”. This means that the aircraft is?”. “Questions like this requires you to know the degree the aircraft will be landing or taking off at,” explained Roman. A very complicated question many comments, yet Roman is up for the challenge. At Engineering Service Learning Roman will receive the support and training needed to to perform at his best when taking his exam.
