The Platform Team is requesting $550 above the $600 allocated to the team for the Fall 2014 semester in order to accomplish the goal of purchasing a UAV platform. Over the course of this semester, the platform team has conducted extensive research on ready-to-fly (RTF) platform packages, and platforms built from parts bought online. The Platform team found that building a platform from scratch would yield a much more customizable platform, but the simplicity and support that comes with an RTF platform outweighs the possible complications and complexities that would come with troubleshooting and repairing a custom platform. Because the target consumers are local farmers who may not be familiar with UAVs, maintenance, reliability and simplicity are critical components of the platform. For these reasons the Platform team selected the 3DR IRIS + to purchase for our UAV.
